Moving home

Staying Sane and Calm during a Move

Moving to a new house or property can be an exciting time, but anyone who has done it before knows it can also be one of the most stressful times we encounter. If you’re not ready for a move, or you’re already under a lot of stress – moving can be potentially damaging to your own health and to your relationships – so it’s not something to be taken lightly.

As a fourth generation family owned business, we at J Doolan Removals know a few things about moving.

Here’s a list of things to keep in mind to help you stay calm and happy during the moving process.

Organise and Clear Your Calendar

You’ll want to make sure that your calendar is clear for the duration of the moving period, and to make sure that there aren’t any other stressful things going on in your life. For instance, if you’re undergoing a performance evaluation at work in the middle of the year – it might not be the best time to be moving home (if you can help it).

Preferably, take time off work, so you can properly dedicate yourself to the task rather than having to run back and forth and work in the evenings – which will stress you out further and prevent you from getting adequate rest.

If you have young kids (those who aren’t old enough to be of help moving!) then you should arrange friends or family to look after them while you go moving.

Plan the Move and Delegate

It’s important to have a plan of action when undertaking a process as complex as moving. Have an inventory, categorise things by utility and location within the home (room by room is usually the most useful scheme).

Set yourself timing goals and things to achieve – and space the work out over a period that is comfortable and leaves room for error.

If you can get friends and family to help you out – all the better – but be sure to delegate duties to people so everyone isn’t just getting in everyone else’s way.

Declutter

Moving is always a good time to declutter. Clutter confuses us mentally and leads to stress. A clean environment is better. Use inventories to make sure you aren’t doubled up on items, and always ask yourself the question: ‘Do I really need this item in my new property?’

Decluttering will save you time and energy when you’re moving your stuff – and the more time you give yourself to throw out superfluous items – the easier the move will be in the end.
